In our LA Expedition time we will be finishing our beginning of the year (BOY) writing benchmarks to see what our writing currently looks like, learning about looking at texts more closely. We will practice underlining words to determine unknown words, asking questions and writing questions, answering our questions and writing statements, and taking. We are working specifically on remembering to put capital letters at the beginning of sentences, using a complete thought, and using the correct punctuation at the end of the sentence. We will also begin to learn the close reading protocol.
In Math our students will be reviewing word problems and subtraction. If you discover your child is struggling, please send me an email or note so that I am aware of their challenges and can assist them, especially since they will be working with Kumu Folau ([email protected]) regularly in math, it makes it easier for me to be aware. Thank you! KUDOS THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT! A huge shout out to the Sanchez Family for bringing in snacks for us this week! The students have really enjoyed them, as they get so hungry by around 10. THANK YOU!! DON'T FORGET: IMPORTANT DATES!!!
HOMEWORK Homework is due at the end of the week, Fridays. If students have any issues with homework and you are unable to help them at home, please come in before it's due and you can get help from me or Kumu Folau. STILL NEEDED We are still in need of some classroom supplies. If you are able to help, please send them in:
This week is adventure week! Adventure is from 12:10-12:50, Monday - Thursday. During adventure week our crew will have math with Kumu Folau from 2:20-3:15 p.m. instead of our normal time. In our LA Expedition module we will be learning about looking at texts more closely. We will practice underlining words to determine unknown words, asking questions and writing questions, answering our questions and writing statements. We are working specifically on remembering to put capital letters at the beginning of sentences, using a complete thought, and using the correct punctuation at the end of the sentence. We will also begin to learn the close reading protocol. In Math our students will be moving on from addition review to subtraction review. These things are things they learned last year and are building on this year. If you discover your child is struggling, please send me an email or note so that I am aware of their challenges and can assist them, especially since they will be working with Kumu Folau regularly in math, it makes it easier for me to be aware. The time between breakfast and lunch is long, and we have found with a little snack we are very successful. If you can help with sending in a healthy snack, we would love it! There are 26 people in our crew. So far we don't have any students with food allergies. If your child has a food allergy, please contact the front office so we can update your child's information.
Here are a few ideas of things to send in:
Thanks ahead of time! This week we start our special classes, we have Heritage on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:40-2:20 p.m. We are starting our year off with Kumu Jessica, who teaches Latin Heritage. Tuesdays from 9:50-10:35 we have Active Play, where Kumu Kellie focuses on healthy lifestyles, cooperative, and crew game time activities. Wednesdays from 9:50-10:35 we head to Kumu Amy's for Music. Together we learn more about creating rhythms, beats, and enjoy learning about music.
The first few weeks of school is lots of protocol learning, routine learning, benchmark setting, and goal making. We will be finishing up our STAR 360 math assessment this week and also learning about buoyancy, and making cork boats. In Math, they are continuing to study number operations with Kumu Folau. In the ELA Expedition Modules, we are learning protocols, like the Carousel protocol, learning about each other, practicing writing complete sentences, question sentences, and restating the questions. We will begin our Term 1 Module: The Power of Reading. DON'T FORGET: Pictures on THURSDAY!! Planners will start coming home next week, we are still learning to use them! HOMEWORK:

GREETINGS CREW!!!
Thank you for a fabulous first week of school!! As we tie up the end of this week together, I just wanted to send a few reminders about homework, supplies, the class pet, book orders, and other communications and logins for software. If you have any questions or concerns, please call or message. Best Wishes, Kumu Jess [email protected] (801) 364-4735 ext.230 WEEKLY HOMEWORK: Homework will come home on Fridays, or the last day of the week and is due the following Friday (or last day of the week). Look for homework today, it’s math. SUPPLIES WE STILL NEED & WANT:
BOOK ORDERS: Book orders will come home on Monday. OTHER COMMUNICATION & SOFTWARE LOGINS: All logins and information on Dojo, Remind, and Facebook will come home on Monday too! BORROW THE CLASS PET: SPIKE, THE VOYAGER Our crew has a class pet, Spike, The Voyager. He is a 4 year old bearded dragon that I rescued last year. He has been a great part of teaching responsibility and trust in our crew. A part of having a class pet that the kids have enjoyed in the past has been bringing Spike home over breaks. We have a few breaks that I would like to offer up, as many students have already begged me to take Spike home. What a great chance to practice responsibility at home, but not have the responsibility forever! It’s almost like being a grandparent, spoil them-then send them home! If this sounds like something you would like to do, here is some information and a few of the requirements:

Dear Students and Families, Welcome to Kumu Jess’s 3rd grade Crew! I am excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I am looking forward to a fun, productive, and SUPER year! A little about me: I have lived in SLC for 8 years now! I have been in education for 12 years, 3 of those years I was a director. I have loved being both a teacher and administrator, but what I missed most about being an administrator was working with the students directly, which is ultimately why I came back to teaching. This is my second year here at PHA and am loving is so far. I love to do all things outdoorsy: kayaking, paddle boarding, rock climbing, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, tennis, soccer, fly fishing, and backpacking. I love to learn new things and am always challenging myself to learn and read. My favorite What will we be learning this year? This year in third grade we will be growing as readers. We will begin reading to learn, instead of learning to read. We will become more proficient writers. We will start with opinion writing in our first module about how people around the world access books and how reading is a super power. This year in math, students will be working with Kumu Folau to solidify their knowledge of number sense and operations, and move on to more challenging concepts like addition and subtraction with regrouping, division, multiplication, and more! Please look for weekly communications about what we are learning. How to support your students learning at home:
In our classroom, community is key! Learning is both a personal process of discovery and a social activity. Everyone learns both individually and as part of a group. The classroom is open to parents at any time, after the first 6 week of us developing our culture. Just let me know if you would like to come join us to see what we’re learning, help with classroom tasks, or help lead activities! Important notes and attachments:
If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to visit our class, schedule a conference, or volunteer to help out, you can contact me at [email protected] OR message me through Remind. Once again, welcome to 3rd grade! We are going to have a SUPER year! Sincerely, Jess Tsu 3rd Grade Kumu |
